1 Tip For A Successful Meditation Practice.

1 Tip For A Successful Meditation Practice DBpsychologyWhen it comes to meditation people can find it difficult to keep a daily practice going. We can get too caught up in what we perceive a meditation practice should feel like. But remembering to keep it simple and that even the most experienced meditation gurus have off days will help.

My first tip would be to try to find one meditation technique that suits you. That will be essential. Mindfulness isn’t for everyone. We can use the 7-11 technique, or combine meditation with something else such as Tai Chi or yoga practice. It really doesn’t matter which one you try. But if you are stressed, anxious, angry, etc., you do need one form of meditation to help promote calmness.

If you already have a meditation technique and would like to cement it as a regular habit then the next tip will help you.

One Tip To Aid Your Success With A Meditation Practice.

A little advanced planning can help you to stay on track. If you attach your meditation to some other activity that you already do it will help you create an automatic habit around meditation Examples of automatic habits can include: straight after breakfast, during your lunch break, while on public transport going home from work, etc.

Attaching your practice to another activity that happens regularly each day can help make it part of your routine and reduce the likelihood of you forgetting to do it. Your regular activity becomes your cue to do your meditation. Having cues are a great way to get any new habit anchored into our daily automatic routines. Don’t forget to set a daily reminder at the time of your cue, an alarmed one is best. Plus remember to mark into you planner. This allows you to begin to take back self-care time just for you every day also.

Make sure to set small goals around meditation to start with. Start with small attainable goals such as 3, 5 minutes or 10 minutes once a day. Even if you only have 30 seconds then start there, the most important thing is that you start. If you tried to do a 30 minute session from day one you will find this hard to stick to. It’s better to build up your formal practice slowly over a number of weeks or months.
